Activities to Reduce Environmental Impacts

As outlined below, the environmental activities of Fujitsu Laboratories Kawasaki Area, Atsugi Area, and Akashi Area reduce the environmental impacts generated from research and development work. All staff participate in these activities. Details of the activities are provided on the following pages.

Energy consumption reduction

Effective use of resources and waste reduction

Strict management of chemicals

Environmental protection related to water and air quality

Activities to Reduce Environmental Impacts

Energy consumption reduction

To prevent resource depletion and global warming, it is essential to reduce consumption of electricity, gas and petroleum, which contributes to carbon dioxide emissions. Fujitsu Laboratories carries out distinct energy-saving activities at each of the three Areas.

The chart shown below gives the annual changes in energy consumption (CO2-t) at Fujitsu Laboratories since 2000.

The amount of the energy used
  • Activities in 2006
    • Infrastructure plant and equipment investment
In the Atsugi Area, We updated the kerosene use absorption refrigerator in a high efficiency turbo refrigerator
  • Main efforts to save energy
    • Room lightings are turned off during lunchtime and in areas where illumination is unnecessary, Personal computers are set to energy-saving mode. Use of elevators is discouraged.(three areas)
    • A card reader system was installed for each air-conditioner so that the air-conditioner can be started and stopped only when a card is inserted and removed. As a result, users can turn on air-conditioners only when needed, and this can prevent air-conditioners from running unnecessarily.(Atsugi Area)
    • A system was installed for precise control of the numbers of running turbo coolers and water cooler/heater units, all of which are electrical equipment in heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning systems, based on current loads. This system helps save the energy required for air-conditioning.(Atsugi Area)
    • Each department sets themes for energy-saving campaigns. All staff participate in these campaigns.(Atsugi Area)
    • Introduction of inverter air-conditioning of a building(Kawasaki Area)
    • As an energy saving tool, We installed an electricity monitor in every main breaker of the power pro-experiment and was able to grasp use electric energy every room, a history every time of the electricity. (Kawasaki Area)

Activities to Reduce Environmental Impacts

Effective use of resources and waste reduction

Fujitsu Laboratories is actively engaging in reducing the waste that goes into landfills by limiting the types of waste generated from research and development activities and making effective use of such waste, with a view toward resource conservation.

  • Efforts to reduce waste generation

In all areas, we promote electronic conference system expansion other than promotion of the backing paper use of computerization and the OA paper of various documents from 2006 and wrestle in paper consumption and reduction of the paper garbage.
  • Recycling efforts

At the three areas, waste is collected and separated in accordance with the waste category and collection rules. Waste is classified as either non-recyclables or recyclables. Some recyclables, for examples, are paper, cans, and bottles. Separate collection boxes for each type of waste are placed at specific workplace locations, such as a recycling corner. The used office supplies and furniture are reused at other workplace, and promoting effective utilization of our assets.
In the case of non-recyclables, efforts are being made to reuse the sludge from treated wastewater into a roadbed material, convert the raw-garbage from kitchen into fertilizer, recycle air-conditioner filters, magnetic tapes, and other such materials, distill and recycle different types of organic waste oils, neutralize waste acids and alkalis, and convert waste oil into combustion improvers.
  • Sustainning of zero-emission (Atsugi Area)

At Atsugi facility, we have achieved zero-emission in Oct, 2002 by waste utilization such as composting of organic waste from the cafeteria and recycling various waste from research work as raw materials for steel and cement manufacturing. In the end of 2002, we succeeded in realizing and sustainning zero-emission at other locations as well.

Zero-emission production environment:
Reclaiming raw materials by re-using or otherwise utilizing waste material while reducing the quantity of non-recyclable waste produced to zero.

Activities to Reduce Environmental Impacts

Strict management of chemicals

Chemicals are likely to cause heavy environmental impacts. Our R&D centers use a wide variety of chemicals. In order to properly manage all of these chemicals, we developed and use an original management system for chemicals.
This system for chemicals shifted to the system which Fujitsu group developed from the original system which We used conventionally in 2006 and planned reinforcement and promotion of efficiency of registration and the management.
This system consisted of variety of information that includes physical properties, hazardous nature, procedures to follow in case of a chemical spill or accident, related rules and regulations, and effects on the environment. Combined in a consistent manner with an earnings and expenses management system and a purchasing system, this system enables strict management of chemicals.

Environmental protection related to water and air quality

Fujitsu Laboratories, as a Fujitsu Group member, has established water and air quality control standards that are stricter than those enforced by government agencies at any level--national, prefectural, or municipal (local ordinances). By conforming to these standards, the company endeavors to protect air and water quality.

  • Water monitoring

Wastewater from the laboratories in the Atsugi Area and Akashi Area is properly treated at wastewater treatment facilities before it is discharged into the public sewer system. To comply with our own standards, we monitor the water quality at regular intervals.

  • Air monitoring

We take measurements at regular intervals in accordance with the existing regulations. We not only comply with the emission standards enforced by government agencies but also monitor air pollutants for conformance to our own standards. At no time has the air quality at or around our facilities violated the voluntary standards.
