Making interfaces effortless...
Creating computers that can communicate naturally with people

Simply speak into a computer and the system will search for the products you want from shops around the world, or gather the detailed information you need for your business. Striving to create human-machine interfaces that are simple for people of all ages to use, we are developing a variety of technologies, from intelligent interfaces that make it easier to search for the information you need, to voice-activated control technology, to robots that can support people in their daily lives.
Ubiquitous Communication

In order to realize anytime, anywhere communications, we are developing IP network systems and quality control technology for open wireless networks. We are also developing network services for mobile terminals that enable voice and data multicast communications, or allow users to securely access and operate home electronic appliances remotely while on the road. Furthermore, we have developed UBWALL, an interactive display system. By holding up a smart card or mobile phone to a UBWALL installed in a shopping mall or other location, a user can view the location of desired stores or products tailored to his or her preferences.

Business Intelligence and Knowledge Management

We are developing various ways to process intelligence, such as data/text mining to extract useful information from a large database, and a multimedia retrieval system to select relevant information from the vast number of Web pages on the Internet while browsing images. Research is also progressing on knowledge management and language translation technology to optimize the use of information and know-how in the workplace and other environments.

Natural Language Processing
Our main study is on how to make computers understand human languages and how to process them promptly and accurately in a variety of ways. The study of machine translation, which resulted in a number of basic technologies now being used in various language processing applications, requires the deepest language analysis out of the language processing studies. We are aiming at developing basic technologies necessary for a natural language interface in a ubiquitous environment, intelligent communication with domestic robots, and an intelligent QA system for supporting intelligent activity through the progress of the technologies of language understanding and knowledge representation.

Data Compression Technology
Data compression reduces the size of large files by removing redundancy. It is an effective method to enhance data transmission time and increase storage capacity. Fujitsu Laboratories has developed techniques for lossless data compression that restores compressed data completely without 1-bit loss, and for compaction of XML documents that improves the performance of XML data-processing. We also have developed image data compression technology for various products such as printers, digital cameras, and medical imaging devices.

Image and Voice Processing

We are researching technology that will enable people to communicate more naturally using the most fundamental methods of communication: image and voice.
In the field of image technology, we are developing technology compliant with the latest H.264/AVC compression standard that improves image quality while reducing processing loads to more efficiently store and transmit video images. We are also developing image processing technology for higher quality image display on PCs, recognition technology for unmanned surveillance, and character recognition technology.
In addition, we are developing signal processing technology to enhance voice quality for mobile phones and VoIP(Voice over Internet Protocol) systems, voice recognition technology for voice-based computer operation, and voice synthesis technology that mimics natural speech, including regional dialects.

Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS)
Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) will connect people, roads and automobiles via next-generation information and communication technologies to achieve greater safety, comfort and convenience on the road. We are working to develop functions to improve driver safety and enhance peace of mind based on real-time wireless networks, sensing and recognition technologies, built-in computer platform technologies and device technologies such as millimeter-wave radar, which can measure the distance between automobiles, even in the rain.
I/O Devices
We are working on the research and development of I/O devices that help people access information on broadband networks as they gain size and complexity. Our objective is to develop user-friendly devices such as an ultrasonic handwriting input pen that allows you to input characters and images without a special pad, and a mobile image scanner enabling you to obtain information any time you want from newspapers, magazines, and business cards. Other examples of our research include a newly developed compact, scratch-resistant touch panel using surface acoustic waves, which has a light transparency ratio of 98% and provides excellent viewability, and a low-power "electronic paper" viewing device. Through this research, we aim to be both user and environment friendly.

Electronic Paper

We have developed electronic paper, which is a bendable color display that can serve as an environmentally friendly substitute for conventional paper in a wide variety of applications, such as notices, product advertisements, and signs posted in public places. It can also be used as an embedded display in smartcards.

Robotics

We are developing robots to provide support both in the home and in the office. We have created a biped robot capable of stable and fluid movement through an original movement control algorithm that utilizes neural networks. We have also developed a service robot that can provide various forms of support in offices and commercial settings, such as greeting and escorting guests, moving parcels using a cart, and patrolling buildings at night. Our goal is to develop robots that communicate easily with people and provide useful services.
