Fujitsu Introduces World's Most Compact 100G/400G Integrated Coherent Receiver for Digital Coherent Receiving Systems

March 07, 2014

- Ultra-compact size 1/3 of conventional products/ Integrated VOA and monitoring functions -

Kawasaki, Japan, March 7, 2014- Fujitsu Optical Components Limited (FOC) announced today that on July 1st, 2014 it will be releasing the world's most compact Integrated Coherent Receiver supporting 100G DP-QPSK (*1)and 400G DP-xQAM (*2)for beyond 100G optical networks. This product incorporates PLC (*3)along with micro-assembly technologies to achieve the integration of VOA (*4)and monitor functions (*5),90° Hybrids (*6), Balanced Receivers (*7), and Polarizing Beam Splitters all into a single package. The ultra-compact size is 1/3 in volume compared with conventional products. This product will help facilitate the production of optical network systems which are both compact and high in performance.

New services such as mobile broadband using smart devices, social networking, cloud computing, and on-line streaming have led to a rapid increase in the volume of communications traffic. This has created a great demand for 100G optical networks. The requirement for Core Networks to handle larger capacity and longer distance on their links has led to a spread of 100G optical networks using digital coherent transmission systems (*8). R&D activities related to the commercialization of next-generation 400G optical networks have also gained significant momentum. 100G/400G digital coherent transmission systems though have had size problems due to the large number of parts required for achieving the necessary performance.

Fujitsu Optical Components Limited has successfully commercialized the world's most compact Integrated Coherent Receiver (1/3 in volume compared with conventional product). The receiver supports both 100G DP-QPSK and 400G DP-xQAM digital coherent transmission systems. By using PLC and micro-assembly technologies this receiver also has been able to integrate the VOA and monitor functions that have been placed outside receivers previously. This product enables drastic size reduction for the receiving part of 100G/400G coherent transceivers while maintaining the high performance optical characteristics from the PLC.

Key Features

  1. Ultra-compact size with integrated VOA and monitor functions
Receivers for digital coherent transmission systems require VOA functionality to variably attenuate the optical power and monitor functions to detect the received optical signal strength. VOA and monitor PDs were previously mounted separately in the coherent transceiver to realize these functions. The size of the coherent transceiver could not be reduced though due to the space requirements for the mounting of these components and the forming of the fiber. FOC has been successful in drastically reducing the size (1/3 in volume compared to the conventional product) while integrating VOA and monitor functionality into the integrated coherent receiver through the use of PLC and micro-assembly technologies.
  2. 100G DP-QPSK and 400G DP-xQAM modulation support
The design uses miniaturized PLC chips with high optical characteristic along with the integration of many optimally arranged parts to enable support of both 100G DP-QPSK and 400G DP-xQAM modulation.
  3. Support for the interface to the next generation DSP
A digital coherent transmission system achieves high-speed transmission at 100G and 400G by compensating the waveform distortion that occurs in the optical transmission path through digital signal processing. A problem has existed though because of the high power consumption required by the current DSP chips to achieve high performance. Reduction of the power consumption for the DSP chip is now proceeding. This integrated coherent receiver supports the electrical signal interface to the next generation low power consumption DSP chips.
  4. Compliant with OIF specifications
All specifications (package, optical and electrical specification, electrical pin position etc.) are compliant with OIF specifications.

Fujitsu Optical Components Limited plans to display samples of this product at OFC 2014 which is scheduled to take place from March 11 to 13 in San Francisco, California, USA.

Glossary & Notes

(*1) Acronym for Dual-Polarization Quadrature Phase Shift Keying. A method of phase modulation for digital signals in which 2 bits of data are allocated to each of 4 modulated optical phases (0, 90, 180, 270°) for both P-polarized and S-polarized light.

(*2) Acronym for Dual Polarization-x Quadrature Amplitude Modulation. A method of phase modulation for digital signals where multiple bits of data are allocated to modulated optical amplitudes and modulated optical phases for both P-polarized and S-polarized light.

(*3) Acronym for Planar Lightwave Circuit. Optical circuit on a silicon chip or quartz substrate containing optical waveguides with accuracies on the order of an optical wavelength

(*4) Acronym for Variable Optical Attenuation function. Function to variably attenuate the optical signal strength. Adjusting the attenuation amount in accordance with the received optical signal strength allows for acceptance of a wide dynamic range of optical input power.

(*5) Function to detect the received optical signal strength. To detect only the received optical signal suppression of the high power local reference light used in heterodyne and intradyne detection systems is required.

(*6) Optical mixer component that is used for coherent signal demodulation purposes in heterodyne and intradyne detection systems. The hybrid mixes the incoming optical data signal with optical reference source and guides the combined signal to the balanced receivers.

(*7) A receiver consisting of two photodiodes which receive differential optical output from 90° Hybrids. Improved receiver characteristics are achieved by using the difference between the two photodiode currents.

(*8) Converts the received optical signal to an electrical signal in the optical receiving section after combining the received optical signal with a local reference light. The waveform distortion that occurs in the optical transmission path is then compensated for by digital signal processing. This technique allows for significant reduction in system cost through the elimination of optical dispersion compensators and optical amplifiers for loss compensation.
