Tool for computing radiative transfer in the atmosphere

Radiative transfer simulation software VIEWSPECT contributes to research on global environment problems, such as ozone depletion or global warming, as a tool useful to atmospheric remote sensing. Since VIEWSPECT is based on Mathcad (www.mathcad.com), and the great portion of the contents of rocessing are displayed in usual mathematical expressions and thus understandable, it can be easily customized for user applications. Our special algorithm substantially accelerates the speed of line-by-line calculation of the molecular absorption cross section, which realizes interactive radiative transfer simulation on Windows platform.

Features

  1. A special line-by-line calculation algorithm (dozens times as much improvement in the speed compared to the standard line-by-line calculation) is used for calculation of the molecular absorption cross section.
  2. Sample worksheets for various applications, from gas cell experiment to more complicated ones such as ground- or satellite-based observations of the earth atmosphere, are provided.
  3. In the satellite observation simulations, it supports the various observation techniques and geometrical conditions such as the solar occultation measurement or the nadir looking observation of reflected sun light. Curtis-Godson approximation is utilized for multi-layer geometries.
  4. Molecular line databases HITRAN and GEISA are supported.
  5. Various types of instrument functions, such as triangle, normal distribution, and sinc functions, are vailable. Apodization fuctions such as Norton-Beer's are included, too.
  6. The use of Mathcad provides the flexibility, transparency, and increased efficiency which are previously unseen in this kind of software.

  • Transparency: The contents of processing are displayed in the form of expression and the overall flow is easily grasped.
  • Flexibility: The expressions and the parameters on a worksheet can be modified to freely customize VIEWSPECT for user needs. Customized worksheets can be saved for after use.
