How Japan's data processing pioneer became Japan's leading information system creator.
Back when a computer was a mainframe and a program a stack of punchcards, Fujitsu - Japan's largest computer manufacturer established a company named FACOM from Yurin Denki Seiki's computer division, Japan's oldest computing center. The date was 1963, a year before the Tokyo Olympics and Japan's revolutionary Shinkansen bullet train. Japanese business and industry were in an expansive phase, and FACOM offered complete data processing know-how and services backed by its parent company's reputation for innovation and reliability. As the company grew, it led the way in all major data processing fields, pioneering commercial time sharing in the Japanese market, and establishing Japan's largest commercial network. Now renamed Fujitsu FIP, the company ranks among Japan's largest system integrators and total solutions providers, with the longest history in the industry. In 1983, Fujitsu FIP was officially commended by MITI, Japan's Ministry of International Trade and Industry, for its contribution to the Japanese information industry. Fujitsu FIP's clients are not limited to government and industry. With a strong commitment to new multimedia applications, Fujitsu FIP creates an immense variety of systems, all based on close consultation and user-need analysis - the keys to effective results that extend throughout the client organization.
